Kyle Todd and Trevor Romele scored two touchdowns each as the San Lorenzo Valley High Cougars defeated Aptos High, 28-14, a weekend ago to even their record in league at 1-1.
On Friday night, Oct. 16, the Cougars will host Soquel High in the first night football game at the high school.
The school’s booster club has rented lights as a trial to see if Friday night games would draw larger crowds. If this week’s game is a hit, the club will consider building permanent lights at the high school’s sports complex.
On Saturday, Oct. 10, the Cougars’ running game proved too much for the Aptos Mariners. Todd rushed for 195 yards on 39 carries, and Romele carried 13 times for 85 yards from his quarterback position.
Romele also picked off two passes, one each from Riggs Powell and Miles Norton, who split time at the helm for the Mariners.
The Cougars led 7-0 at halftime after a seesaw first half, highlighted by Romele’s first touchdown on a 34-yard run.
Todd scored in the third quarter to make it 14-0, but Aptos responded on a 56-yard touchdown pass from Powell to receiver Brandon Valle.
After a fourth-quarter touchdown by Todd, Zach Powell of Aptos returned a kickoff 88 yards for the Mariners’ second score.
But Romele punched in a 3-yard touchdown with one minute, 46 seconds left to put the game out of reach.
Nick Gorman caught three passes for 45 yards to lead the Cougars, as Romele went 7-for-14 through the air.
The Cougars’ defense held Aptos running back Evan Mehl to 8 yards rushing on five carries just a week after he scored five touchdowns.
Todd leads the Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League in scoring, with 14 touchdowns through six games.
San Lorenzo Valley High is 2-3-1 overall, 1-1 in the SCCAL, after a 34-31 loss to St. Francis High two weeks ago.
