Cal Fire today announced that fire season in Santa Cruz County is over.
As of 8 a.m. on Monday morning, permitted open burning is allowed again the county.
The end of fire season coincides with last week’s storm that dumped more than 10 inches of rain on the San Lorenzo Valley.
Backyard burn season – different than permitted burning – opens December 1 and runs until April 30. Contact Cal Fire for specific guidelines.
The San Mateo/Santa Cruz Cal Fire Unit responded to 205 wildland fires this summer within the two counties, including the 7,800-acre Lockheed Fire in Bonny Doon and Davenport in August.
However, the majority of fires, Cal Fire officials reported, were less than 10 acres as local firefighters and Cal Fire teamed to put out the blazes.
