It was hot! Temperatures ranged between the high 90’s and low 100’s, but that did not keep visitors home. Family groups were engaging with their children while the kids enjoyed the petting zoos and many other attractions. Some of the kids had their faces painted. Even leashed dogs were seen following or leading their families around the Festival grounds.
There were juried art exhibits featuring photography, paintings, jewelry, many high-quality craft items, and much more. No need to think about getting hungry because the food corridor wafted mouth-watering aromas that made eating decisions a lovely choice. Prestigious wineries and award-winning breweries pouring their wares kept the tasters busy sampling the wines and beers.
Many people were delighted to discover that the Scotts Valley Water District was providing ice cold water so that they could stay hydrated in the heat. Piret Harmon, the SVWD General Manager, was one of the servers. She was heard inviting people to “have a drink.” As a member of the Scotts Valley Chamber of Commerce, Harmon was also responsible for designing the new layout for the revamped Festival.
Scotts Valley Police Department was amply represented. Retired Lt. John Hohmann displayed his motorcycle and cars that reportedly he has driven in a few races. The vehicles drew quite a bit of attention as people were permitted to “look under the hood.” At Hohmann’s booth, visitors to the Festival had the treat of hearing directly from him about the Special Olympics and how it helps many disadvantaged children and adults.
Live music kept people walking to the music with a happy step. In spite of the heat, it was difficult not to tap your toes or move to the beat.
Donna Lind, Scotts Valley Vice Mayor, was seen checking identification and issuing wrist bands for beer and wine tasting. Between being a police officer, mayor, and a city council member, Lind has devoted over 30 years of her life to public service in Scotts Valley. About her immediate task Lind said,” It’s a great way to give back. The proceeds from the fund raiser provide so much good for the Scotts Valley community that helping out is just a little way of being part of it all.”
