Karen van Putten, the Principal of San Lorenzo Valley High School, applied an excellent principle of communication when she sent a letter to the families whose children were under lockdown on February 2. She reported that she had called for a lockdown on the three campuses and why she had done so.
She had responded to a rumor that there was someone who was in possession of a weapon on the elementary school campus. With safety of her students in mind, she initiated a lockdown and reported what had occurred on the tri-campus to the Sheriff’s Department and the Fire Department.
After the Sheriff’s Department and the Fire Department conducted a search of the tri-campus, it was determined that the area was safe. The lockdown was lifted after 35 minutes and classes resumed.
“Please know that we take threats to our students, staff and campus very seriously, and while this incident created a level of anxiety, I am proud to report that together with law enforcement’s support, our staff and students were able to practice for a real emergency and we learned areas where we can make improvements,” said van Putten.
