State parks seek volunteers

The Castle Rock and Portola Redwoods state parks are looking for volunteers to become park stewards.
The next two training series are scheduled for April 23 and 30 and May 7 and 14 from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
According to Elizabeth Hammack with California State Parks Department, each volunteer is required to commit to work six hours a month for one year.
“Our volunteers will patrol the trails. They’ll sort of be the eyes and ears for State Parks — roving interpreters answering questions for the public,” Hammack said, adding that most of the roughly 50 current volunteers at Portola and Castle Rock have been working there for years or even decades.
“It’s a tremendous experience and opportunity — a chance to be a part of the team that’s protecting our parks and wildlife for future generations,” she said.
The class will be capped at 20 people so Hammack encouraged people to apply early for the two Saturday sessions. She said volunteers will also be trained to give guided tours, explain natural and cultural history, park stewardship, trail etiquette and safety.
