You have heard about rock superstars and tech giants beginning in garages. Donald and Sue Cramb have their own sudsy version of the legend: beginning their microbrewery in their garage in Boulder Creek.
The owners of Steel Bonnet Brewing Company of Scotts Valley, which opened at 20 Victory Square last fall, are building a family business in the brewing traditions of their native Scotland, serving a range of craft ales in their tap room.
“California Brewed, Scottish Attitude” is their motto. With assistance from son Callum, daughter Catriona, son-in-law James Wagner and cousin Tyler Walters, this is truly a family operation.
They make small batches of craft beer using imported ingredients, from British ales to robust stouts and porters to American West-Coast-style IPAs, that are served by Sam Peacock, manager of the tap room.
They created a “Golden Jubilee” summer ale for the Scotts Valley 50th Anniversary, and are donating a portion of the proceeds of the sale of the ale to the Scotts Valley Advocates.
The Crambs came to California from Edinburgh 25 years ago. Both still have their day jobs, Donald at Synopsis in Silicon Valley, and Sue running an after-school tutoring business, Expressive Learning, in Scotts Valley.
There are T-shirts available at www.steelbon.net.
The tap room is open Monday-Thursday, 4-9 p.m., Friday, 3-9 p.m., and Saturday, Sunday, 1-9 p.m.
