Kip Tellez, trustee of the San Lorenzo Valley Unified School District, announced his resignation as a trustee at the Sept. 7, 2016 board Meeting, effective Thursday, Sept. 8.
Tellez was elected to the board in 2006 and has been a trustees for 10 years.
He was the representative for the Felton area (Trustee Area 4). Because his resignation occurred after the filing deadline for the Nov. 8 election, there will be no election for his replacement. Instead, the school will appoint his successor.
 “It has been a richly rewarding experience, and I resign knowing I will miss working with such wonderful, professional colleagues. But the time seems right to offer other caring community members the chance to learn about, and lead, this wonderful organization,” said Tellez in his resignation letter.
Tellez is a professor in the Education Department at the University of California at Santa Cruz. A specialist in language teaching and research on student achievement, he received his PhD in education from the Claremont Graduate University.
He has two daughters, both SLV graduates. One daughter is now attending Vassar College, the other has graduated from Occidental College and is now attending law school at New York University.
Tellez previously served on the SLVMS Site Council, and was on the writing team for SLV Elementary and SLV Middle School Distinguished School applications.
“It has been a pleasure to work with Dr. Tellez. His experience in K-12 education is an asset to the entire school district,” said SLV Superintendent Laurie Bruton. “We look forward to an ongoing professional relationship with Dr. Tellez in his role at UCSC.”
The district will be accepting applications for interested parties living in Trustee Area 4 (Felton).  Applications are available at the District Office, located at 325 Marion Avenue, Ben Lomond or online at www.slvusd.org.  All applications must be turned in to the attention of the Superintendent’s Office by 4 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 19.  For questions, please contact Vickie Bergquist at 831-336-5194.
The school board will hold the interviews for Trustee Area 4 at the regularly scheduled Board Meeting of Wednesday, Sept. 21, during Open Session.
Individuals must reside within the boundaries of Trustee Area 4 to be eligible for this position.  The Santa Cruz County Elections Department can to confirm eligibility.
