SLV, SV students tapped by National Merit program

The National Merit Scholarship Corporation has recognized local high school students for their high scores in the 2017 scholarship competition.
San Lorenzo Valley High School, principal Jeff Calden announced that Mira Lion is a Semifinalist in the 2017 National Merit Scholarship Competition.
In addition, five seniors – Ava Badger, Ian M. Gallagher, Robert A. Jeffrey, Harrison Melcher and Miranda K. Robinson – have been named Commended Students.
A Letter of Commendation from the school and National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC), which conducts the program, has been presented to these scholastically talented seniors.
In Scotts Valley, principal Valerie Bariteau announced that five Scotts Valley students earned recognition as Commended Students.
They are: Chanson J. Benjamin, Alvin Ding, Brandon H. Einck, Ryan S. Mitchell and Conor T. Santos.
Mira Lion was among 16,000 Semifinalists in the 62^nd annual National Merit Scholarship Program, and has an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 7,500 National Merit Scholarships worth about $33 million.
The Commended Students placed among the top five percent of more than 1.6 million students who entered the 2017 competition by taking the 2015 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT).
About 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise.
