Birthday hole-in-one
The day before her 59th birthday, Kathy Shortley of Santa Cruz sank her first hole-in-one on the third hole of Valley Garden’s Golf Course in Scotts Valley.
Shortley, who celebrated her birthday the next day, Monday, Nov. 30, holed the ace from 96 yards away using a 4-iron. Sue Wald and Ed Martinez witnessed the shot.

Walk-in registration for girls softball is under way at the Vine Hill School multipurpose room, 151 Vine Hill School Road.
Registration will be open from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 5, and from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 10.
Practice starts in February, and games begin in March.

Bethany hoops player honored
Bethany University sophomore Rachael Estabrook was named the California Pacific Conference women’s basketball Player of the Week for the week of Nov. 23.
Estabrook averaged 14.5 points and 2.5 rebounds in a 1-2 week for the Bruins.
The Bruins lost to Western Oregon University, 90-34, that Wednesday; lost to Corban College, 76-48, that Friday; and beat Willamette University, 68-58, for its first win of the season that Saturday.
The final two games of that stretch were a part of the Bruce Henderson Memorial Capital City Classic.
The Bruins next face Southwestern College at home at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 5.
Bruins fall twice at Thanksgiving tourney
The Bethany University men’s basketball team (2-10) fell to California State University, Stanislaus, and Johnson and Wales University of Colorado at the Lamont Ramsey Classic in Atherton last weekend.
Stanislaus jumped out to a 42-26 halftime lead and cruised past the Bruins, 85-53. In the game, James Jansen led the team with eight points, followed by Tauran Moore, Ron Houston and Micah Jones with seven each.
In the second game against Johnson and Wales, the Bruins were within seven points with seven minutes remaining, but fell 57-42.
Moore led the Bruins with 17 points, six rebounds, three steals and two blocks.
The Bruins return to action against American Sports University and Biola University on Dec. 17 and 19 in Southern California.
