SV girls hoops open 3-1
The Scotts Valley girls basketball team has opened the season with a 3-1 record after a recent 75-31 win over King City on Wednesday, Dec. 9.
Alex Price leads the team in scoring with 17 points per game, and three players average more than 13 points.
Whitecaps reach the top
The Central Coast Whitecaps traveling baseball team finished the fall season with a 28-7 record.
The team is made up of 12 players from Santa Cruz County, managed by Matthew King and coached by Mike O’Boy, Tom Carli, and Art Danner.
The season began in August, when the ’Caps won the Western Wood Bat Nationals in Manteca, and finished Thanksgiving weekend, with a championship in the Toys For Tots tournament, also in Manteca.
The ’Caps have a 53-18 record over two years. Their record includes competition in title games in 11 out of 15 tournaments entered, five championship wins and six runner-up finishes. The team never finished lower than third place in those 15 tournaments.
Bethany hitter honored
Bethany University senior outside hitter Brittany Francis was named a 2009 Daktronics-NAIA Volleyball Scholar Athlete for her work in the classroom and on the court. Francis is one of 304 volleyball players nationwide to receive the honor.
She carries a 3.575 grade-point average and will graduate with a degree in English. She plans to pursue a master’s degree in education at Bethany after graduation.
Bethany runners earn all-conference honors
Freshman runners Antony Earley and William Copsey were both named to the 2009 All-Pacific Athletic Conference team for their top-10 finishes at the Cal-Pac championship meet last month. Earley finished second and Copsey took ninth in the race.
