EDITOR,
We are glad to hear that Debra ReQua (“Waste of precious energy,” Letters, Dec. 4) and the San Lorenzo Valley Chamber of Commerce share mutual concern for the environment. When the chamber recently recharged its efforts, a key component was to implement a strong environment-focused mission.
Our local Light Up the Valley contest, which supports Valley Churches United Missions, can and should be as environmentally friendly and sustainable as possible. We have heard from many participants that energy-efficient lights have been purchased from locally owned stores. We encourage their commitment to conscious holiday energy consumption while celebrating the season.
Since 1982, Valley Churches United Missions has provided more than $14 million in food, transportation vouchers, utility assistance, medical aid, emergency housing and school supplies for families in the San Lorenzo Valley. They accomplish this remarkable feat with only volunteerism, donor-advised funds, and in-kind donations from local businesses. It is the support of the community that supports our community.
In that spirit of joyful giving, we are honored to host the annual Light Up the Valley fundraiser.
We invite everyone to our Community Holiday Potluck and Light Up the Valley Awards Banquet this Monday, Dec. 14, at Felton Community Hall. We also invite all to help Valley Churches United Missions provide meals and services to people who would go hungry without their help.
Additionally, we hope that community members join their local chamber in an effort to help that organization move forward with its stated mission.
