Valley People: SVHS grad completes Coast Guard training

Coast Guard Seaman Brian P. Hostetter, a 2005 Scotts Valley High School graduate, recently graduated from the U.S. Coast Guard Recruit Training Center in Cape May, N.J.
Over eight weeks, Hostetter completed training in water safety and survival, military customs and courtesy, seamanship skills, first aid, firefighting and marksmanship, with an emphasis on physical fitness, health and wellness.
Hostetter will join the 36,000 men and women who make up the Coast Guard.
Ben Lomond resident graduates
Ben Lomond resident Ryan Vencill graduated from Azusa Pacific University with a Bachelor of Science degree in marketing Dec. 19. He was joined by more than 600 graduates at the winter commencement ceremonies.
Resident picks up phone books
Valley Women’s Club member Hilary Stanley picked up 1,714 pounds of unwanted phone books in the San Lorenzo Valley between May and October of this year in a massive personal recycling effort.
Then she submitted an entry into state Sen. Joe Simitian’s There Oughta Be a Law contest.
Stanley’s proposal would require phone book companies to mail a postcard to all California residents and businesses that gives them the option of receiving a phone book.
For those who want one, the books would be delivered by U.S. mail, rather than dropped at mailboxes or on front porches.
The result would be the production of fewer books, less litter and less waste.
If Stanley’s law is chosen, she would be invited to lunch with Simitian and would have the opportunity to testify in support of her bill at a formal hearing in Sacramento.
