Scotts Valley senior Isaiah Velez put together a season in one game, scoring the Falcons’ first four touchdowns to spoil North Monterey County’s homecoming celebration.
He rushed for two touchdowns, caught a touchdown and returned an interception for a pick-six for the Falcons in a 42-0 smashing win over the Condors in Pacific Coast Athletic League Cypress Division play on Oct. 1.
Velez finished 230 yards on 15 carries, giving him 889 yards rushing and boosting his season touchdown total to 14.
He returned an interception 82 yards for a score and ran for a 45-yard touchdown in the first quarter. Velez tacked on scoring runs of 45 and 41 yards in the second half.
Senior receiver and defensive back Brock Siechen returned a punt 50 yards for a touchdown and scored on a 36-yard run.
Cole Leonard made all six extra-point kicks.
Brady Siechen made a fumble recovery and Carltom Keegan, Zac Helmold and Nolan Smith recorded sacks for Scotts Valley, which posted its second shutout of the season.
The Falcons (4-1, 2-0) host Sequoia out of Redwood City in a non-league game today at 3:30 p.m.
Watsonville 21, SLV 14: Jaden Hunter scored on a 40-yard run in the third quarter but it wasn’t enough as the Cougars fell to the Wildcatz in PCAL-Cypress division play.
Matthew Carney scored on a one-yard run in the second quarter for SLV.
The Cougars (2-2, 0-2) drove down the field to the Wildcatz’s red zone for a potential game-winning drive, but they turned the ball over on downs with three minutes remaining.
Watsonville responded with a drive of its own, forcing SLV to burn its remaining timeouts, before kneeling on the ball to kill the remainder of the game clock.
Anthony Campos’ touchdown reception with six minutes remaining in the fourth quarter held up as the winning score for the Wildcatz.
Colin Parker finished with three TD passes for the Wildcatz (3-3, 1-1). Vicente Mosqueda made a touchdown catch in the second quarter and Carlos Rodriguez had a touchdown catch in the third quarter.
Mosqueda and Jacob Saiz recorded interceptions and Matthew Flores had a sack for Watsonville.
SLV hosts Rancho San Juan on Oct. 9 at 2pm.
Girls tennis
Scotts Valley 7, SLV 0: Freshman Gabrielle Casper, juniors Emma Dyc-O’Neal and Veronica Farquhar and sophomore Stella Cheney won singles matches in straight sets as the Falcons remained undefeated in the SCCAL on Tuesday.
Casper beat Kendall Fournier 6-2, 6-0 in the No. 1 spot; Dyc-O’Neal beat Tessa Jacquerot 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2; Farquhar beat Caden Pluefenger 6-0, 6-1 at No. 3 and Cheney beat Denisha Warren 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4.
The Falcons also swept doubles action in straight sets. Senior Liz Bahr and sophomore Samantha Warner, junior Livia Johnston and sophomore Maya Bensen and senior Liat Weinstein and freshman Erin Szymanski earned wins.
Scotts Valley (5-0, 4-0) hosts Aptos on Thursday at 4 p.m.
Boys cross country
Brabo wins Artichoke Invitational: Scotts Valley senior Ryder Brabo won the small schools race at the 17-team, 115-runner Artichoke Invitational in Half Moon Bay on Oct. 2.
He finished the 2.3-mile course in 12 minutes, 02 seconds—a school record on the course—to lead the Falcons to the team title with 32 points.
Brabo would’ve also won the large schools race reserved for D-I and D-II school enrollments, which was won by Woodside senior Ethan Brooks in 12:06.
Falcons senior Austin George (12:32) placed third, followed by juniors Jack Brownfield (12:55) in seventh, Aiden Boothby (12:55) in eighth and Jonah Verinsky (13:20) in 13th. Senior talent Jeremy Kain missed the meet to take a recruiting visit to Duke University.
Girls cross country
Boothby wins Artichoke Invitational: Scotts Valley sophomore Ashlyn Boothby won the eight-team, 65-runner small schools race at the 2.3-mile Artichoke Invitational in Half Moon Bay on Oct. 2.
She left the rest of the pack in the dust, crossing the finish line in 13:52 and helping the Falcons win the team title with 33 points.
Boothby finished nearly two minutes faster than runner-up Sofia Jackson of St. Mary’s College who placed second in 15:35.
Boothby’s time would’ve won her the large school race, which was won by Woodside senior Elle Marsyla in 14:03.
Scotts Valley senior Megan Wu (15:54) placed fifth, sophomore Diana Alivov (15:56) placed sixth, junior Rafaela Putnam (16:15) was 12th and sophomore Dresden Brabo (16:30) finished in 15th.
Baseball
SLV to retire Tyler Gilbert’s jersey: Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Tyler Gilbert will have his San Lorenzo Valley High baseball jersey retired on Saturday.
The school will host a brief ceremony at 1pm, prior to the Cougars’ football game, to honor the 6-foot-3, 223-pound left-handed pitcher.
Gilbert’s No. 12 jersey is the first number the program has retired.
On Aug. 14, the 27-year-old became the first MLB pitcher in 68 years to throw a no-hitter in his first start, blanking the San Diego Padres 7-0.
