Scotts Valley High sophomore Ashlyn Boothby outlasted 175 other runners in the Varsity Girls-Small Schools race at the 42nd ASICS Clovis Invitational at Woodward Park on Oct 9.

Boothby crossed the finish line first in 17 minutes, 57 seconds in the 5-kilometer course to help the Falcons place sixth out of 25 teams with a score of 179.

San Francisco University High won the team title with a score of 67. 

Diana Alivov (20:54; 48th), Megan Wu (20:59; 52nd), Rafaela Putnum (21:09; 57th) and Dresden Brabo (21:14; 58th) also scored for the Falcons.

Scotts Valley 17, Santa Cruz 41: A flock of Falcons had a strong finish on its 2.51-mile course, helping Scotts Valley defeat the Cardinals in Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League action on Sept. 7.

Ashlyn Boothby (16:11), Wu (16:57) and Brabo (17:11) finished 1-2-3, respectively.

Santa Cruz’s Hadley Dobkin (17:12) took fourth, followed by Falcons senior Greta Feague (17:14) and sophomore Diana Alivov (17:21).

Next up, Scotts Valley will compete in the Terry Ward Bellarmine Invitational at Baylands Park in Sunnyvale on Oct. 16. 

Boys cross country

Kain takes 10th at Clovis Invitational: Scotts Valley senior Jeremy Kain took 10th in 15:11 at the 42nd ASICS Clovis Invitational at Woodward Park in Fresno on Oct. 9.

His top 10 finish in the Championship Boys 5K race helped the Falcons place 17th out of 24 teams with 378 points. 

Scotts Valley’s Ryder Brabo (15:38) placed 29th, followed by teammates Austin George (16:36) in 112th, Aiden Boothby (16:44) in 127th and Jack Brownfield (16:52) in 134th.

Scotts Valley 25, Santa Cruz 32: Falcons seniors Ryder Brabo and Jeremy Kain both crossed the finish line in 13:31 in their SCCAL win over the Cardinals on Scotts Valley’s 2.51-mile course on Oct. 7.

Santa Cruz’s Jim Ratliff (13:33) placed third, followed by teammate Eli Fitchen-Young (13:52) and Scotts Valley’s Austin George (13:58) to round out the top five.

Next up, the Falcons will compete in the Terry Ward Bellarmine Invitational at Baylands Park in Sunnyvale on Oct. 16. 

Football

Scotts Valley 35, Sequoia 0: The Falcons posted their third shutout of the season with a win against the Ravens in the teams’ non-league game on Oct. 8.

The defense was led by Matis Barbier, who recorded three of Scotts Valley’s six sacks in the afternoon. Zac Helmold, Matthew O’Brien-Rojo and Nolan Smith also had sacks.

Falcons senior Brock Siechen scored two touchdowns, including a 65-yard run to open the scoring. Isaiah Velez made it 14-0 in the first quarter with his 10-yard run.

Caden Stratton returned a punt 61 yards for a touchdown in the second quarter. Niko Iles scored on a 10-yard run in the fourth quarter and Siechen capped the scoring with a 40-yard sprint to the end zone.

The Falcons (5-1, 2-0) will attempt to keep their four-game win streak alive at Rancho San Juan (1-4, 1-1) in Salinas on Saturday at 1pm.
