First responders raced along Pacific Coast Highway, Dec. 14 around 6pm, as flames shot above a car sitting motionless at an oceanside turnout north of Scott Creek in Swanton.

When firefighters and the California Highway Patrol arrived, they found a dead body inside the four-door sedan.

Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office investigators were dispatched around 6:20pm.

“We do not suspect any foul play or criminal activity surrounding this incident and are waiting for a toxicology report for cause of death,” said Ashley Keehn, the Sheriff’s Office spokesperson, on Monday.

The case is being handled by the Santa Clara County Medical Examiner.
