Tandy Beal & Co presents ‘Wide Wide World’
Tandy Beal & Company will present its visionary arts education program, Wide Wide World, this fall to four grades at Vine Hill Elementary School in Scotts Valley.
Teaching artists from around the world, who live locally, are highlighted. The goal of the program, which begins Sept. 8 and continues through October, is to inspire young people to be curious about the larger world through the beauty of music and dance from other cultures.
The teaching artists demonstrate their art form and teach music and dance from around the world. This year’s lineup includes: Ikuyo Conant from Japan, Papiba Godhino from Brazil, Keith Cowans whose heritage is Cuban, Noni Anderawati from Bali, Mehana Thomas and Becky Shingai from Hawai’i, Dror Sinai from the Middle East (Israel, Syria and Turkey), Ryan Boun from Cambodia, Mohamed Bangoura from Guinea Conackry and Izumi Sato, who was born in Japan but lived and studied in India for many years.
“Our goal is to stimulate children’s appetite for learning about this magnificent world we live in, with all the many inspiring cultures,” according to Tandy Beal.
Besides dance and music skills, students gain greater: geographic knowledge, respect for the diversity and beauty of other cultures, and learn a few words in another language, especially “thank you.” Central to Wide Wide World is the development of a greater awareness of the power of art and imagination.

St. Andrew’s to host Open House this Sunday
St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, in the center of Ben Lomond just off Highway 9, will offer an Open House/Welcoming Sunday on Sunday, Sept. 10, beginning with 10am worship service, followed by an “Ice Cream Social” refreshments.
Then at 1pm, Lisa Robinson, president of the Board of the San Lorenzo Valley Historical Society, will offer a presentation on “The History of the San Lorenzo Valley and St. Andrew’s Place in It.” The presentation will be in the historic 1901 church with slides and discussion.
All events are free and are open to all, regardless of religious or spiritual background or affiliation.
St. Andrew’s morning service includes the only church pipe organ in the Valley. All are welcome to receive Holy Communion. For more information, visit saintandrewsbenlomond.org.
Long-term overnight closure of Highway 9 begins Thursday
Major work on Highway 9 to repair damage from winter storms will result in a long-term overnight closure beginning Thursday, Sept. 14.
This overnight closure will take place on a section of the highway known as Jaye’s Slide, which is located at Post Mile 8.8 in Ben Lomond, near Park Way and Shadowbrook Road at the north end of Highlands County Park.
Travelers will encounter the overnight closure from 7:30pm-6:30am, seven days a week, for approximately 10 weeks.
The Sept. 14 start date is conditional pending utility work being completed. Highway 9 will remain open and operate under one-way reversing traffic control during daytime hours.
A detour is available on Glen Arbor Road. Travelers should expect delays of up to 10 minutes. Message and directional signs have been placed in advance of the project area.
This overnight closure will allow crews to drill foundation piles through the ground to enhance the structural strength of the soil to support the roadway.
Overnight closures are expected to be in place through Nov. 4. One-way traffic control will continue to be in effect for several weeks once the overnight work is completed.
