Scotts Valley Little League AAA Pirates etched their names into District 39 history on June 15, edging out the Santa Cruz Little League AAA Angels 9-8 in a heart-pounding championship showdown to become the 2025 Minor League Tournament of Champions (TOC) winners.

This marks the first time in five years that Scotts Valley has taken home the title.

The Pirates wasted no time getting on the board, scoring in each of the first five innings and racking up 10 hits total. Despite a fierce mid-game rally from the Angels—who exploded for five runs in the fourth inning to tie it—Scotts Valley’s grit and depth proved too much.

Lucas Brooks and Colin Kramer were clutch for Scotts Valley on the mound, combining for 13 strikeouts in the game. Brooks started strong, fanning nine batters while allowing just two earned runs over 3 2/3 innings. Kramer came in to close it out, striking out four and earning the save.

Offensively, Donovan Schidel led the charge with two hits, including a triple, and scored twice. James Smith added two doubles and two RBIs, while Hudson Phillips went 2-for-3 with two RBIs of his own. Arlo Weston and Wyatt Schidel each chipped in key hits to keep the pressure on the Angels’ defense.

Behind the plate, Jorian Wolff was a rock for the Pirates, catching all six innings and anchoring the defense with poise and grit. His leadership and game management were critical in handling the Angels’ aggressive offense and guiding the pitching staff through tense moments.

The Pirates’ aggressive baserunning and strong defensive plays helped seal the deal in the final inning, staving off a last-ditch push by the Angels, who managed two runs but ultimately fell just short.

With this victory, the Pirates cap off a stellar season and bring home the District 39 Minor League TOC title to Scotts Valley. The win is especially sweet for the team’s players, coaches and families, who’ve shown heart, hustle and unity all season long.
