Scotts Valley’s beloved outdoor concert series, “Music at Skypark,” is back for its 16th season, promising lively music, community gathering and support for local arts education.
The free, all-volunteer event kicks off on Sunday, Aug. 24, at Skypark, located in the heart of Scotts Valley, with a lineup guaranteed to get toes tapping and spirits high.
Organized by the Kiwanis Club of Scotts Valley, the series has become a cherished summer tradition. As Jim Melehan, a Kiwanis member, explained, “Music at Skypark has become a true community event. It’s a chance for local folks from throughout the area to gather in a nice park setting and enjoy the best outdoor music around, with lots of good friends, food and drink. We’ve really hit our stride with families especially.”
All profits from the concerts are dedicated to supporting music and arts programs at local public schools, a mission that has raised nearly $250,000 over the years.
“Thanks too to all the folks who have attended Music at Skypark over the years and bought food and drink to help support music and arts programs in local public schools,” Melehan added. “Putting on these concerts is a lot of work, but I think I speak for all Kiwanians when I say it feels good to give something back to our community and our schools.”

The Aug. 24 lineup features two energetic bands. The opening act, Fishhook, will perform classic rock hits from 1:30-3pm, captivating audiences with their distinctive vocals and guitar work. Following them, the headliner Extra Large takes the stage from 3:45-5:15pm, bringing their renowned funk-infused blend of classic rock, blues, reggae and Latin beats. Known for their horn section and lively performances, Extra Large consistently draws large crowds and has been a favorite at Skypark for years.
Concessions—including food, wine, beer and other drinks—will be available for purchase, with support from local businesses. Attendees are encouraged to come hungry and ready to enjoy a day of great music and community spirit.
Volunteer opportunities and sponsorships are also open; interested parties can visit svkiwanis.org or contact event coordinators Mike Stewart at 831-334-8899 or Jim Melehan at ji*****@*sn.com.
Looking ahead, the series continues on Sept. 28 with an exciting lineup featuring The Inciters, a dynamic 10-piece band fronted by three female vocalists, blending English rock, Jamaican ska, reggae and New Wave. They will be followed by headliners The Houserockers, another crowd favorite with their horn-driven, foot-stomping sound, having performed at Skypark more than 10 times.
Beth Hollenbeck, former music director of Scotts Valley Unified School District, noted, “Music at Skypark continues to be the main source of funding for our District’s music program. On behalf of our students, staff and administration, please know how deeply grateful we are for your support of this growing program. It’s no wonder the NAMM Foundation repeatedly awards Scotts Valley the ‘Best Community for Music Education’!”
With a reputation for lively performances and community camaraderie, Music at Skypark remains a highlight of Scotts Valley’s summer calendar, celebrating music, community and education.
