Teen artists bring Broadway showcase to Scotts Valley
Local teen artists will take the stage for “Musical Moments,” a Broadway showcase directed, choreographed and performed by youth performers, including alumni and students from Scotts Valley High School.
The production features a variety of musical numbers from classic and contemporary Broadway shows, highlighting student vocals, choreography and staging. Selections include songs inspired by productions such as “Hamilton,” “The Outsiders,” “The Book of Mormon” and “Legally Blonde.”
Performances will be held at The Landing, 251B Kings Village Road in Scotts Valley, on Friday, Aug. 7, at 7 p.m., and Saturday, Aug. 8, at 2 and 7 p.m. Doors open 30 minutes before each performance.
Tickets are donation-based, with a suggested donation of $15. Tickets can be reserved online through Ticket Tailor or purchased at the door.
Author shares story of family, mental illness at SV Library
Author Martha Graham-Waldon will present the second edition of her memoir, “Nothing Like Normal: Surviving a Sibling’s Schizophrenia,” at the Scotts Valley Library, 251 Kings Village Road, on Saturday, Aug. 15, at 2 p.m.
The memoir recounts Graham-Waldon’s experience growing up with an older sister who developed schizophrenia at age 15. The newly released second edition includes a tender epilogue that continues the story as Graham-Waldon reunites with her sister’s daughter, exploring how joy can emerge from tragedy and pain.
The book is intended for readers who have experienced the effects of mental illness within a family and offers a message of validation, understanding and hope. The event is being presented in recognition of August’s National Wellness Month.

METRO invites photo submissions for bus wrap contest
Santa Cruz Metropolitan Transit District (METRO) is inviting community members to participate in its new Bus Wrap Photo Contest, a competition highlighting the natural beauty, wildlife and landscapes of the Monterey Bay through original photography.
The contest is part of METRO’s One Ride at a Time initiative and will feature selected photographs on a full METRO bus wrap and in official marketing materials. The contest is funded through METRO’s Transit and Intercity Rail Capital Program grant.
The competition includes community and employee photography categories, with proposed themes including nature, sustainability, transit and environmental stewardship. Submitted photographs must be high-resolution horizontal images taken within Monterey Bay and Santa Cruz County and include a title, location and brief artist statement.
The contest builds on METRO’s existing One Ride at a Time bus wrap series, which features images from local photographers showcasing scenes throughout the region.
