Adult hoops league to launch in Scotts Valley

Teams are sought for a recreational basketball league for adults and teens that will begin play in August in Scotts Valley. The league is organized by the Scotts Valley Parks and Recreation Department and games will be played at the Scotts Valley High School gymnasium each Sunday beginning Aug. 18.
“We don’t have (a basketball league) here,” said site supervisor Gabe Gonzalez who will organize the league. “This league branches off the Twin Lakes league and Mount Hermon league.”
In recent years, privately run basketball leagues in both Mount Hermon and at Twin Lakes Church in Aptos have come and gone. With the Twin Lakes league stopping last fall, it made sense for Scotts Valley Recreation to start up a league, similar in format to the city’s popular softball league.
The basketball league will have three divisions: Division I for 18-and-up, Division II for 14-and-up and Division III, a co-ed league for players 14-and-up. There will be eight teams in each division and each team will play seven weeks of regular season games. The top four teams in each division will qualify for a week of playoffs.
The cost is $520 per team and $10 more for every non-Scotts Valley resident. Division III games will be played on Sunday mornings, Division III on Sunday afternoons, and Division III on Sunday evenings, Gonzales said.
Each game will be officiated by two referees and a scorekeeper from the local referee union.
“Come out and have fun,” Gonzales said.
