A potluck this weekend will celebrate the life of longtime San Lorenzo Valley resident Al Haynes. He was 64 when he died.
Mr. Haynes, born in San Francisco, was a graduate of University of California, Santa Cruz, and spent two years in the Special Forces in Vietnam. He was married to his wife, Su, in 1969. Mr. Haynes retired early from the San Lorenzo Valley Water District nine years ago after 20 years of service, due to a sudden illness. He and his wife moved to Kauai, Hawaii, shortly afterward.
Mr. Haynes was an environmental activist. He was active in Save San Lorenzo River Association and a member of the Valley Women’s Club and supported Mrs. Haynes as a parks commissioner. He also served on political campaigns, coached youth soccer and played football and softball.
Mr. Haynes is survived by his wife, Su Haynes of Kauai, sons, Aaron and Bret Haynes; father, Alfred William Haynes Sr.; sisters, Patty Justice and Beatrice Antony; brothers, Anthony and Eddie Haynes; sister-in-law, Wendy Thurston, and her husband, Dave Thurston; three grandchildren; and other relatives, all from the San Francisco Bay Area.
A potluck celebration of Mr. Haynes’ life will begin at 1 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 30, at the Highlands Park Senior Center, 8500 Highway 9, in Ben Lomond.
