Felton Farmers’ Market hosts the Apple-A-Day Festival on Tuesday, Sept. 9, a celebration honoring the apple.

This event has become a beloved tradition over the past decade, and we love rolling it out in the late summer when the days are warm and apple varieties are coming on in great numbers.

Apples have been one of the most important and long-grown crops in Santa Cruz County. They are healthy, delicious, hardy and loved for endless reasons. On Sept. 9, during the standard market hours (1:30-5:30pm), this free event hosts a flurry of activities for kids and adults alike, all in praise of the apple.

Santa Cruz Cider invites you to join in apple pressing and fresh apple juice tasting. Take a turn at the crank and learn how many apples it takes to fill a jar with their liquid gold.

Preservation enthusiast Jessica Tunis brings a huge amount of experience, troubleshooting and teaching skill to a free apple pie filling workshop from 3-4pm—learn how to use the abundance of what’s in season in a delicious way that makes people happy.

KERMIT the bicycle, book-mobile from the Santa Cruz Public Libraries offers an apple scavenger hunt—learn foodie facts, talk to farmers and win a basket of strawberries. You’ll find live music, face painting, organic apples for sale and all the standard joys of this sweet neighborhood market.

With over 35 years under its belt, the Felton Farmers’ Market is a celebrated staple of the San Lorenzo Valley. As we get deeper into the season and the variety of fruits and vegetables expand with long days and warm weather, remember that the Market connects residents with regional growers from the mountain towns.

In addition to the special festivities of Apple-A-Day on Sept. 9, week in and week out the Market delivers a robust selection of organic vegetables, fruits, herbs, eggs and flowers. Joining the farmers are some of the best food artisans in our area.

Make sure to visit the Penny Ice Creamery with small-batch ice cream, Roli Roti and their rotisserie chicken, La Linda Empanadas, Scrumptious fish and Chips and fresh corn tortillas from Mexy. Coffee, fresh breads, seafood, pastries and other ready-to-eat cuisine abound.
