Heart O' the Mountain winemaker Brandon Brassfield pours a glass of his Pinor Noir.

Aug. 13 and 14 will bring the 12th annual Scotts Valley Art and Wine Festival, a celebration of local painters, sculptors, photographers, jewelers, glass workers, brewers and vintners, to the fields of Skypark.
From 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., visitors to the admission-free event will have the chance to sample for themselves some of the rich flavors of the local community as 12 local wine makers set up shop alongside artists showing their wares. Here is a sampling of some of the locals who will be in attendance:
Wine all the time
This weekend will mark the sixth consecutive year Brandon Brassfield has operated a booth representing the Heart O’ the Mountain winery at the Scotts Valley Art and Wine Festival.
This year, Brassfield said, he will pour tastes of the winery’s 2008 vintage of its signature pinot noir, as well as promoting an upcoming club wine tasting and garden tour of the winery, housed on the former estate of Hollywood legend Alfred Hitchcock in the mountains above Scotts Valley.
“We love that festival,” Brassfield said. “We’ve had a blast doing it every year.”
The winery, located on 16 acres, has been producing wine since 2005, with its first product hitting shelves in 2007.
Blown-glass creations
For Felton-based glass artist Chris Johnson, this year’s festival will be his fourth displaying his hand-blown glass creations, such as pumpkins, vases and glasses.
“I don’t use molds, I pride myself on that,” Johnson said.
The former building contractor and computer consultant said festivals like this weekend’s are an important way for an artist to begin making a name for him- or herself.
“Scotts Valley has been a good show for me,” he said. “I love that town.”
Johnson is one of many artists who will show wares during the show. For a complete list, visit www.scottsvalleychamber.com.
