At its Wednesday, Nov. 20 meeting, the Scotts Valley City Council voted to wait 60 days before making a decision regarding the fate of the Polo Ranch barn.
Located near the former Borland site on Santas Village Road, the barn sits on a 113-acre site owned by Lennar Homes — which has designs on constructing new single-family homes on a portion of that land.
The barn, a Scotts Valley landmark which dates back more than 70 years, has been derelict for years despite sporadic efforts to restore it. The barn was designed by influential Bay Area architect William Wurster.
The developer has offered the city $1 million in exchange for allowing the barn to be demolished.
At the Nov. 20 meeting, several proponents of preserving the barn voiced their protests.
City Manager Steve Ando said that during the 60 days, city officials will meet with the city’s Parks and Recreation Commission, representatives from the Scotts Valley Historical Society, and “anyone else who wants to participate” to discuss, with Lennar, alternatives to demolition.
