A memorial bench was unveiled in the Scotts Valley Middle School quad this morning to commemorate longtime history teacher Tom Milnes who died in August at age 55.
Milnes, a history teacher at the school for 20 years, was well-liked at the school.
Friends said he brought humor and energy to campus and connected with middle school students easily.
The bench was placed in the quad at the middle school during a rainy ceremony, on Feb. 13. Community donations allowed for the memorial to be built and placed at the school.
Milnes wife Jeanne and son Evan were scheduled to attend the ceremony along with the school’s student body. Principal Mary Lonhart led the proceedings.
Milnes was also active in the community outside the classroom, volunteering for the Salvation Army and working as a music minister as several churches. He played guitar, mandolin and banjo and played in various local bands.
