The residents of the Boulder Creek Fire Protection District are invited to “Chat with the Chief,” an informational coffee at the Boulder Creek Volunteer Fire Department, 13230 Highway 9, Boulder Creek, at 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 7 to get information about Measure N,  on the Nov. 8 ballots of voters in the district.
The district has the largest number of voters among fire districts in the San Lorenzo Valley, 6,318 registered as of Sept. 27, according to the county Board of Elections. Measure N would levy a $35 per year parcel tax on all property in the district, to buy new fire equipment.
The parcel tax would fund the purchase of ire engines, protective clothing, and breathing apparatus for the next 30 years.
Revenue generated by the additional assessment will go directly to a restricted fund established only for the purchase of specific equipment through 2048.
The presentation will be made by Boulder Creek Volunteer Fire Department Chief Kevin Mc Clish.
McClish cited increased fire incidents in the mountainous district in recent years, putting pressure on the volunteer fire companies, which he attributed to drought and increased remodeling and expansion of residences. He noted that some insurance cost increases are based in part on the local fire department’s ability to respond quickly with modern equipment.
“Measure N will provide the Boulder Creek Volunteer Fire Department with the funds necessary to replace this equipment when it becomes obsolete, according to nationally adopted standards. The money generated will be used for no other purpose,” he said.
This measure is endorsed by Fifth District County Supervisor Bruce McPherson and the Valley Women’s Club.
