Boulder Creek Man Killed in Solo Accident

A 72-year-old Boulder Creek man died in a crash early Sunday when his vehicle went off the road along Highway 17, authorities said.

Stephen Gardner was headed northbound around 12:50am, just south of El Rancho Drive, when he lost control of his 1999-era BMW, according to California Highway Patrol officer Alyssa Gutierrez.

The vehicle veered into two wooden posts, before colliding with the tree along the right shoulder, she said.

The man suffered major injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene by medical responders.

It’s unknown if alcohol or drugs were a factor. The cause is still under investigation.
