The San Lorenzo Valley High School boys volleyball team has yet to find a win in Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League play after falling to the Aptos Mariners on March 13 in three straight games.
“We came out really flat tonight,” said first year Cougar Head Coach Chickory Roth. “Our team is still feeling each other out and learning their roles but they are really pretty young.”
The loss to the Mariners came by scores of 25-21, 25-12 and 25-17. SLV hung with the Mariners in games one and three finding themselves tied 12-12, and 15-all, but couldn’t close out a game.
SLV was led by sophomore outside hitter Derek Wolf who nailed four ace jump serves and added nine kills, several from the back row. Fellow sophomore Adam Lopez served up 19 assists. It is Lopez first year setting and he reached a few out of position passes that seemed nearly impossible to reach.
The Cougars only senior, Eric Lange, added five kills for his struggling team, but had a hard time finding the holes in the Aptos front block.
“Eric had a rough night tonight,” Roth said. “They seemed to have his number on defense and he just couldn’t hit around them.”
The Cougars have earned one win this season against Alisal High in pre-season play. They are 1-5 overall and 0-3 in SCCAL play on the season. They played after press-time against Mount Madonna on March 15 and then host Santa Cruz at 6:30 p.m. on March 20.
