The Brookdale Inn and Spa, formerly the Brookdale Lodge, is once again the property of the State Bank of India, after no one was willing to pony up the $3.2 million minimum bid at a trustee auction last month.
The trustee auction, held on Friday, Nov. 22 on the steps of the Santa Cruz County Courthouse, was conducted by Irvine-based Real Estate Financial Services, Inc.
The property, as famous for its alleged ghosts as for the celebrities and politicians who frequented it in its long-past heyday, has been shuttered since October 2011, when Boulder Creek fire officials shut down the property due to safety violations.
The former owner, Sanjiv Kakkar, purchased the lodge in 2007 for $5.3 million. He pleaded no contest in May to a count of felony insurance fraud, as well as two misdemeanors that stemmed from lack of worker’s compensation insurance and building without permits.
