Ben Lifted 4 Wheel Drive and Hitch, a longtime Santa Cruz customized truck business, moved from its location near Costco to Scotts Valley in January. But digging in has been challenging for owner Ben Burdette and his staff.
The new address for his garage, 34 Janice Way, Ste. B, is off the beaten path.
“People just don’t know that we’re here,” Kendra Adelson, president of operations, said.
Burdette, who gave his name to the business, started Ben Lifted in Santa Cruz in 2003 out of his love of creating customized off-road trucks. He builds custom lifts and tow packages and tailors trucks with rims, tires and specialized welding.
His personal favorite is his 1986 Toyota 4Runner that he’s virtually built from the ground up. The truck is built for rock-crawling in the Sierras, for river crossings and rough terrain of any kind.
“I’ve always been interested in off-road trucks and lifts,” Burdette said.
He’s driven his own trucks all over the Rubicon, around Tahoe and through the Sierra Nevada range on camping trips with friends.
Adelson and Burdette said the shop’s staff is responsive to customers and offers free drop-off and pick-up service. A 15 percent discount is available to Scotts Valley customers.

Spa expands, adds tea room
Luminescence Day Spa is expanding its spa services and adding a tea room at its new address, 13140 Highway 9 in downtown Boulder Creek.
The owner, Lizzie Fenton-Lochner, is trained in Hawaii and specializes in lomi lomi, a Polynesian-style massage.
“In healing with aloha, one must recognize the divine nature in every living thing and have great reverence that when we connect with another, we are then connecting with the divine,” she said.
The tea room will serve kava, a relaxing Polynesian beverage, and Hawaiian drinks and organic teas.
The grand opening for the spa and tea room is planned for Dec. 17. Existing spa services will be available at the new shop by appointment starting Monday, Nov. 1.
