As of Jan. 1, 2010, smoking will be completely prohibited throughout the grounds of Dominican Hospital and Dominican Rehabilitation Services in Santa Cruz.
Smoking has been banned inside buildings for many years, but the new rules include the entire campus, inside and out.
“We are all aware of the health hazards of smoking,” said Dr. Nanette Mickiewicz, hospital president, in a prepared statement. “As a health care provider, we have a responsibility to model health behaviors that we want to see in our community.”
Doctors, nurses and respiratory therapists can help patients with nicotine replacement therapy and discuss options and resources for quitting.
Discounts on nicotine replacement products will be available to hospital visitors.
Businesswoman earns insurance certification
Melinda Chavez, a commercial lines manager for United Valley Insurance Agency, has earned the designation of certified insurance counselor. Chavez completed a rigorous insurance education program sponsored by the Society of Certified Insurance Counselors.
Chavez works out of the United Valley Insurance office on Whispering Pines Drive in Scotts Valley.
Local shop to compete in electric motorcycle races
Scotts Valley-based Zero Motorcycles is building a racing bike it plans to run in the Time Trial eXtreme Grand Prix electric motorcycle racing series in 2010.
TTXGP is the first zero-carbon, zero-emissions race series. The inaugural race took place in June, and the series will continue May 14 through 16 at the TTXGP North America Championship at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma.
Notary service available
Senior Citizens Legal Services will notarize most documents for $10 two days each week in Santa Cruz.
Documents that can be notarized include living trusts and powers of attorney.
Notary services are available Tuesday and Thursday afternoons by appointment at 501 Soquel Ave., in Santa Cruz.
