A vehicle fire that started at about 3:50 p.m. on the 2900 block of Granite Creek Road in Scotts Valley was quickly extinguished by the Scotts Valley Fire Department Wednesday afternoon.
A young man driving a mid-1990’s Toyota Camry station wagon with a passenger stopped midway up a hill on Granite Creek near Sherman Drive and smoke began to come out of the wheel well.
The young men tried to put the fire out with a garden hose from a nearby home, but it was too much and they called 9-1-1, said a neighbor.
The fire started because of a coolant leak caused the car to overheat, the neighbor said. The driver stood by the scene while the car burned and did not want to talk about what happened.
The Granite Creek was closed by police officers as black smoke billowed from underneath the hood of the car. The rancid smell of burning rubber also floated through the neighborhood as onlookers came out of their homes to watch firefighters put out the blaze.
The front of the car appeared destroyed and the two young men unloaded at least four skateboards from the trunk after the fire was put out.
