Memorial services will be next week for Carolyn Ann DeWitt, 83, of Ben Lomond, a well-known local volunteer, who died Sept. 18 in Capitola, surrounded by her family.
Her husband, William “Bill” DeWitt, preceded her in death eight months earlier.
Mrs. DeWitt was known around Ben Lomond for her daily 6-mile walks, rain or shine, chatting and waving to everyone she encountered.
Born in Turlock, Mrs. DeWitt grew up in Oakland. She met and married her husband in 1948, and they lived for many years in San Francisco. The couple moved to Capitola in 1971 and in 1978 moved to Ben Lomond, where they could be closer to Mrs. DeWitt’s mother.
She became involved with the Scotts Valley Senior Center and volunteered by driving the center’s van, coordinating computer classes, raising money for programs, participating in fashion shows, organizing day trips and helping wherever she could.
Mrs. DeWitt is survived by her daughter, Candace Carpenter of Ben Lomond; son, Daniel DeWitt of Deer Park, Wash.; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will begin at 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 15, at Felton Presbyterian Church, 6090 Highway 9. Members of the church are handling arrangements.
