Charity becoming more costly

In light of the continuing downturn in the economy and the upturn in unemployment, I find it unfortunate that it’s becoming more and more expensive to support charities I’d really like to support. 
For instance, there are the continuing letters about the $400 fee to adopt a pet from the local SPCA and animal rescue groups. I called the original letter-writer about that to suggest she adopt from Santa Cruz Animal Services, where it’s much less expensive, or go to the Monterey shelter, which has a program for those older than 62. 
As for the cost of caring for a pet, I recently adopted a 10-year-old dog for $55 from SC Animal Services and put the money saved into excellent food and vet care. 
Most rescue groups also charge around $400, which means many good pets don’t find homes. I’d definitely support any group that helps unite middle-income guardians with “forever friends.”
I just noticed that a benefit barbecue for the new Scotts Valley library is $35 to $40 a ticket. That is $80 a couple. My husband and I used to attend many benefit dinners, but we can no longer afford to support any of the charities we’d like to support. 
We know it’s all for a good cause, but the coordinators should consider that you’re just pricing many of us completely out of these charitable events.
