A chimney fire caused approximately $100,000 in damage at Byington Winery in the Santa Cruz Mountains last Thursday.
Cal Fire, Boulder Creek Fire, Felton Fire and American Medical Response all responded to the afternoon blaze that damaged the roof and rock chimney of the picturesque Los Gatos winery located on the 21800 block of Bear Creek Road between Boulder Creek and Los Gatos.
The fire was reported at about 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 6.
Cal Fire officials, which estimated the $100,000 in damage, gave kudos to the winery for reporting the fire quickly, which enabled firefighters to extinguish it quickly.
The fire started in the fireplace and made its way up to the roof. A Cal Fre official said this may have been the second or third chimney fire at the winery.
The winery could not be reached on Monday for comment.
