City plans multipurpose room in new SV Library

A room that could host performances and basketball games in theScottsValleylibrary building is being planned, but so far it has no timeline or source of funding.
The Scotts Valley City Council voted at its June 6 meeting to approve plans that represent the first steps in building a 9,000-square-foot multipurpose room as part of the Scotts Valley Branch Library.
The plans call for a partnership with Group4 Architecture and Research Inc. — the firm that designed the library — to work up designs and determine the building costs, said Corrie Kates, community development director and deputy city manager.
“We don’t know yet what it’s going to cost,” he said. “All we’re doing right now is to prepare renderings and cost proposals.”
The proposed multipurpose room addition would occupy 9,080 square feet of unused space inside the library building’s south side. The library occupies about 13,150 square feet of the building, which was previously an indoor skating rink and sports center.  
The project would not use city funds, Kates said; instead, construction would depend upon finding outside money.
“Similar to the library funding, we’ll be looking at private funding and grant funding,” he said.
The multipurpose room would be large enough to host events, performances and indoor sports, such as basketball, Kates said.
“It’d be something that helps with the current parks and rec programs,” he said.
Kates said the plan was still in its infancy and there was no timetable for the project to begin, much less finish.
“We’d like it done yesterday,” he said. “But there’s just no funding for it.”
