Last month, the Valley Women’s Club named David Wright as the new managing director of the organization’s recycling and redemption programs.
Beginning July 2, Wright will officially succeed Nancy Macy as she steps down from the role she held for 34 years.
“I am honored to have this opportunity,” Wright said. “I’ve always had a lot of respect for the Valley Women’s Club and was hopeful that this might be a position I would be considered for.”
Wright brings to the position several decades’ experience as an activist and advocate, having served as CEO of the Santa Cruz chapter of the American Red Cross and as the finance manager for the Santa Cruz AIDS Project.
He also co-founded Santa Cruz County Friends of the Rail Trail and is still a member of that organization’s board of directors.
“I’ve been involved in health and wellness issues for a long time,” he said.
Wright will manage the SLV Redemption-Recycling Center locations in Felton, Ben Lomond and Boulder Creek.
He said he was drawn to the opportunity because of his desire to turn recycling into a benefit for the community.
“Santa Cruz County has always had a farsighted approach to recycling,” he said. “My objective is to continue that work.”
He said he hoped in his new role to demonstrate ways to find green pathways “in just about everything we do.”
“We can all recycle more — we can recycle better, as well,” he said. “Anything we can do in Santa Cruz County to reduce that amount helps the environment and puts money back into the community.”
An event honoring Macy’s years of service is scheduled from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. July 1, a Sunday, at Highland Park Senior Center, 8500 Highway 9, in Ben Lomond.
