Scotts Valley Kiwanis Club
The Kiwanis-sponsored Music at Skypark concert series returns for its final show of the season from 3:30 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 30. The free concert series supports the music programs in local schools. Headlining will be Santa Cruz’s own Extra Large, one of the top bands on the Central Coast. Funkranomicon, who garnered rave reviews for their performance at the San Jose Jazz Summerfest, will open.
A special treat at this show will be a performance by Scotts Valley music students led by director Beth Hollenbeck.
Local restaurants and vendors join the Kiwanis Club to serve food, wine and beer to concertgoers, with proceeds also benefiting the school music programs.
Kiwanis has an evening meeting at 6 p.m. the second Wednesday of each month and 7 a.m. on all other Wednesdays. All meetings are at Bruno’s BBQ, 230-G Mount Hermon Road, in Scotts Valley. Those interested in joining us in providing service to the community are welcome.
 
Scotts Valley Lions Club
Scotts Valley Host Lions Club will be walking the community collecting for our annual White Cane Day event on Oct. 5 and 6. The money raised will be used to help preserve sight and hearing for local residents. The club provides new glasses to those who cannot afford to purchase them.
The club recently sent an individual to the Lions Eye Foundation Center in San Francisco for treatment to restore some of his lost vision and help him return to a productive life.
Club members continue to serve lunches twice a month at the Scotts Valley Senior Center, 370 Kings Village Road.
On Oct. 7, the club will host its second bocce ball tournament at Skypark. The cost for a four-person team is $100. Lunch is included.

San Lorenzo Valley Rotary Club
On Aug. 4, club members worked at the Felton Community Hall, cleaning up the landscaping around the hall as an ongoing commitment of our club. Then, Aug. 21, the club welcomed 40 new teachers and a principal to the San Lorenzo Valley School District at a breakfast at the district’s office.
The club attended the Sept. 11 opening of the Santa Cruz County Fair and traveled to Second Harvest Food Bank for a breakfast and barrel wrap on Sept. 22.
On Oct. 3, Janet Coit and Mike Holton, Rotarians from Florida, will visit with the group. Two new members are scheduled to join the club Oct. 10. Scotts Valley resident June Gilliam, an Asian Art Foundation volunteer, will speak about reviving 5,000 years of Chinese civilization on Oct. 17. And on Oct. 24, a former Rotary district governor from Buenos Aires will be featured. The month will end with a Halloween party during the Oct. 31 meeting.
The club meets at 7:15 a.m. Wednesdays in Birch Dining Room at the Mount Hermon Conference Center, 37 Conference Drive, in Mount Hermon. Cost is $10.
 
Scotts Valley Exchange Club
Exchange Club of Scotts Valley has changed its annual golf tournament date to 8 a.m. Friday, Oct. 26 at Valley Gardens Golf Course in Scotts Valley. The club’s primary fundraiser includes a continental breakfast served before play and a barbecue lunch provided by Mike Pasquini and his crew. Cost is $45. Former Santa Cruz Mayor John Daily will speak as a special guest to the club’s monthly social club meeting at 5:30 p.m. Oct. 24 at Scotts Valley Branch Library, 251 Kings Village Road.
The talk is open to the public, and snacks and drinks are provided.
The club meets at noon the second Wednesday of each month at Mint, 4652 Scotts Valley Drive, in Scotts Valley and has a monthly social club meeting the fourth Wednesday of each month at the library.
