Scotts Valley Host Lions
Last month, the club cleaned its Adopt-A-Highway section of Highway 17 and sold dessert items at the Scotts Valley Educational Foundation’s Music at Skypark. Proceeds were donated to the SVEF.
The club also participated in the South Bay Stand Down in Boulder Creek, bringing its A.J. Robinson Mobile Screening Unit to help the veterans who showed up. Palo Alto Veteran’s Hospital sponsored the event, and the club provided free eye and hearing screenings to veterans.
Upcoming events include the Oct. 2 White Cane Days fundraising drive, in which club members will collect donations for sight-aid programs in Scotts Valley. All donations will go sight conservation.
The club meets at the Scotts Valley Senior Center at 7 a.m. Tuesdays, except for the second Tuesday of each month, when the senior center-based meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. This month, the dinner meeting is Oct. 13.

Kiwanis Club of Scotts Valley
The induction of officers for the 2009-2010 year will be Oct. 3 at Rio del Mar Beach, coinciding with the Monte Foundation Fireworks. The new president is Larry Beaman. Other officers are Marshall Wolf and Rick King.
Last month, the club co-sponsored Music in the Park in Skypark with the Scotts Valley Education Foundation. The Kiwanis donated the stage, worth $1,000, and sold $1,700 worth of drinks. All proceeds benefit the music programs of local schools.
The Kiwanis Club also donated $500 to the Parks Advocates again this year.
Kiwanis has cleaned up the west side of Highway 17 every month this year.
On Sept. 9, the group hosted Peter Burke, the editor of the Press-Banner newspaper.
The club meets 7 a.m. Wednesdays at Heavenly Café, 1270 Mt. Hermon Road, with a cost of $5. On the second Wednesday of each month, the meeting begins at 6 p.m. at the Scotts Valley Hilton, with a cost of $20. This month, Santa Cruz County Supervisor Mark Stone will be the club’s guest.

Rotary Club of San Lorenzo Valley
On Sept. 15, the club attended the opening day of the Santa Cruz County Fair.
On Saturday, Sept. 19, members did community service at two events: the San Lorenzo River clean-up and the Ohlone Day Festival at Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park in Felton.
The club’s October guest speakers include: Oct. 7, International Committee Report; Oct. 14, TBA; Oct. 21, John Gallagher, with a topic of organ donation; and Oct. 28, Susan True from First Five.
The club meets at 7:15 a.m. Wednesdays in the Birch Dining Room at the Mount Hermon Conference Center on Conference Drive in Mount Hermon. Cost is $10.

Rotary Club of Scotts Valley
The club participated in an ‘e-waste’ clean-up on Saturday, Sept. 12 in Scotts Valley, during which 372 cars dropped off electronic waste for recycling. On the same day, club members volunteered with Save Our Shores to pick up trash at Seabright Beach in Santa Cruz. After the beach clean-up, the club made a giant Rotary wheel out of sand.
Rotary’s fourth annual Oktoberfest will be on Friday, Oct. 16 at 6 p.m. This is one of the club’s biggest fundraisers, and this year the proceeds raised from ticket sales will go directly to Scotts Valley Educational Foundation.
Upcoming club meetings will include speakers who will discuss an AIDS project (Sept. 28), shelter boxes (Oct. 5), and the Santa Cruz Meth Awareness Project (Oct. 26).
The club’s Web site is updated often and includes picture slideshows of various club projects, an updated calendar of events, and information on how to become a member.
The club meets from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Mondays at the Scotts Valley Hilton. Lunch is at 12:15 p.m. and costs $16.
