Scotts Valley Rotary Club
After several successful holiday dinners, the club plans to continue feeding the hungry once a month with generous contributions from Mollie’s Country Cafe, Malone’s Grille, Bruno’s BBQ and Slawinski Auctions.
A third trip to Guatemala with several other area Rotary Clubs will take place at the end of January. A health fair is held in a poor town called Uspantan. Scotts Valley Optometrist and Rotarian Anthony Giannotti will conduct eye exams along with other medical professionals. A non-profit called The Family Album Project will take pictures of the families in town, print them, frame them and give them out for free. Virginia Becker is the photographer. School supplies, vitamins and anti-parasite medication will also be given out amongst other services.
Earlier, the club sponsored a family at Christmas time and helped sponsor the Scotts Valley Christmas tree and Snow Day at Skypark.
Kiwanis Club of Scotts Valley
After a brief holiday hiatus, the Kiwanis hit the ground running in 2014. Applications are available for two club scholarships. The $2,500 Mike Smith scholarship is available to a high school senior in northern Santa Cruz county. The $1,000 Grabill scholarship is available to a high school senior who is part of a Kiwanis-sponsored Key Club at a local high school. Applications are available at local high schools and more information at www.svkiwanis.org.
Joe Aliberti informed the club on January 15 about the progress related to the Boys and Girls Club of the Valleys. The club also made a $1,200 donation to Valley Churches United. On January 20, the club hosted a Division Council meeting for all of the Kiwanis Clubs in the Santa Cruz and Monterey area.
Preliminary planning has begun for this year’s Music at Skypark. Non-club member volunteers are welcome. The club meets at 7 a.m. each Wednesday morning at Bruno’s BBQ, 230-G Mount Hermon Road or the second Wednesday of each month at 6:30 p.m.
San Lorenzo Valley Rotary Club
On February 5 the club will host a speech contest at 6 p.m. at SLV High School.
February 12 Monica Martinez, the Executive Director of the Homeless Services Center will speak; February 19, Denise Fosburgh, principal of Boulder Creek Elementary will speak; and February 26, San Lorenzo Valley Elementary Principal Shannon Calden will share.
The Club meets at 7:15 a.m. each Wednesdays at in Birch Dining Room, 37 Conference Drive, Mount Hermon Conference Center unless otherwise noted. Cost is $10
Scotts Valley Host Lions Club
Club members are gearing up for the 43rd Annual Crab Cioppino Feed & Dance to be held Sat. March 1 at Portuguese Hall, 216 Evergreen Street, in Santa Cruz. Call 429-2017 for tickets. Meetings are open to all at 6:30 p.m. on the second Tuesday of each month and 7 a.m. on the fourth Tuesday of the month at the Scotts Valley Senior Center, 370 Kings Village Road.
