Kiwanis of the Valleys
Kiwanis of the Valleys was a big part of Scotts Valley’s Fourth of July celebration. The club partnered with Leland’s Automotive to participate in the annual parade down Scotts Valley Drive.
Club members handed out flyers along the route to promote the upcoming Music at Skypark concert series, which will debut on Sunday, July 27 at 3:30 p.m., featuring the bands Funkranomicon and The Houserockers.
The show is free, and 60 percent of the proceeds from food and beverage sales will be donated to the music programs in Scotts Valley schools.
During the fireworks show at Skypark, the club partnered with Boy Scout Troop 623 to provide games, prizes, and light-up novelties. The record-breaking revenue that the Scouts generated at this event will go toward helping the scouts attend their Boy Scout camp.
The club recently treated Elisa Bargetto from Scotts Valley High School and Erinna Woo from Pacific Collegiate School — winners of the $2,500 Mike Smith Scholarship and $1,000 Grabill Scholarship, respectively — to a dinner where the pair was awarded their scholarships.
The Kiwanis of the Valleys meets at 7 a.m. every Wednesday Bruno’s BBQ. An evening meeting is scheduled at Bruno’s on the second Wednesday of each month at 6:30 p.m.
Valley Women’s Club
The Valley Women’s Club is planning a candidates’ forum for local voters to see, hear and question candidates seeking election to important local offices — including the SLV Water District’s Board of Directors — before the Nov. 4 election.
The forum will take place early in October, in time for those voting by mail or at the polls to evaluate the candidates. (Note: as a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, the VWC does not endorse individuals running for office. As allowed under the law, the Club does take stands on issues that relate to its mission.)
The VWC also announced that the County of Santa Cruz has awarded the contract to continue operating the three local drop-off recycling centers. The SLV Redemption/Recycling Centers have been operated by the club since the late 1980s.
The club’s Women’s Issues Committee is urging support for the “Seeking Safety” program for military women at Walnut Avenue Women’s Center, and is joining the County Women’s Commission in requesting that the Santa Cruz County Board of Supervisors “take a stand to Bring Back Our Girls; to support the International Violence Against Women Act; and to restate … previous support for full Senate ratification of CEDAW, the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women.”

Scotts Valley Rotary Club
The Scotts Valley Rotary Club enjoyed slicing up watermelons provided by the City of Scotts Valley and giving them away for free at the Fourth of July Celebration at Skypark again this year.
The club has been collecting money for school supplies to provide to the Scotts Valley Middle School. Before the school year ended, club members asked teachers what supplies they usually spend their own money on.
So far, the club has $3,125 to buy the needed supplies.
The club recently enjoyed a farewell party for outgoing President Carrie Birkhofer at Malone’s and welcomed in new President Laureen Yungmeyer.
Plans have been made to support many local charities, schools and groups, including: Scotts Valley Senior Center, Scholarships and Student Awards Dinner for local students, Welcome Back to School Breakfast for teachers, Lynda and Kidz Backpack Project, The PIF Project (Pay It Forward/random acts of kindness), Cub Scouts, Santa’s Workshop for the Rebele Family Homeless Center, and the Rotocare Health Clinic — which supplies free medical care for those with the most need and least access to care.
Scotts Valley Rotary is also involved in several international projects, including Polio Now, which is very close to eradicating polio in the world.
The club meets every Monday at 12:15 p.m. upstairs at Bruno’s BBQ.
