The Kiwanis is planning its charitable efforts through 2010. In addition to helping with the Mountain Charlie Bike Race for the Scotts Valley Educational Foundation, the club will help with the Scotts Valley Criterium, a new bike race in Scotts Valley scheduled for May 16, as well as three Music in the Park performances this summer.
Invitations for scholarship applications have been delivered to San Lorenzo Valley High, Scotts Valley High and Pacific Collegiate schools. Local high school seniors studying through alternative programs are also eligible and should speak with a Kiwanis member for application requirements.
The club meets at 7 a.m. Wednesdays at Heavenly Café, 1270 Mt. Hermon Road ($5), except for the second Wednesday of each month, when the meeting is at 6 p.m. at the Scotts Valley Hilton ($20).
Rotary Club of Scotts Valley
The annual Scotts Valley Rotary Speech Contest was Feb. 16 at Scotts Valley High School, with students speaking on the theme, “The Future of Rotary is in Your Hands.”
The first-place award went to Sydnie Reyes ($100); second place to Ashley Keehn ($50); and third place to Melissa McGee ($25). Reyes will advance to the area contest in Felton in March.
The club raised $2,000 for the Shelter Box project at the grand opening of the Slawinski Auction Gallery on Scotts Valley Drive. Proceeds will buy two shelter boxes for 20 or 30 people in Haiti.
Mayor Jim Reed spoke to the club at its regular meeting Monday, Feb. 22. The next meeting is Monday, March 1.
The club meets from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Mondays at the Scotts Valley Hilton. Lunch is at 12:15 p.m. and costs $16.
San Lorenzo Valley Rotary
The SLV Rotary Club and San Lorenzo Valley Unified School District have joined forces to raise money to support earthquake victims in Haiti. Students kicked off a Coins for Haiti fundraiser that will run through March 25. On March 24, there will be a benefit dinner and silent auction at the Zayante Fire House. Tickets are available at the school district office.
The SLV Rotary Club will conduct a food drive at Ben Lomond Market to benefit Valley Churches United Missions starting at 1 p.m. March 27.

Scotts Valley Host Lions Club
The club had its club-level student speaker contest Monday, Feb. 22, with students from Scotts Valley High participating.
The club will host its 40th annual Crab Cioppino Dinner and Dance on March 13 at the CPDES Hall in Santa Cruz. This is one of the club’s largest fundraisers, and all proceeds go back to the Scotts Valley and San Lorenzo Valley communities.
