Coffis Brothers and the Mountain Men

Fresh off of a year of touring, the San Lorenzo Valley favorite sons in the Coffis Brothers & the Mountain Men band make their third annual appearance at Don Quixote’s International Music Hall in Felton Friday and Saturday, Jan. 6 – 7.
The Ben Lomond-based band features SLV high school grads Jamie Coffis (piano/vocals), Kellen Coffis (guitar/vocals) and Henry Chadwick (drums). Completing the Mountain Men are Adian Collins (bass) and Kyle Poppen (lead guitar).
Chadwick, it should be noted, has become a rising star in his own right.
His solo EP Guest at Home earned him note as one of the best pop songs of 2016 by Rolling Stone. Time magazine quickly followed suit by naming the EP one of the best songs of 2016.
“These shows are special because it turns into a family/ high school/community reunion,” said Jamie, adding that SLV alum singer/songwriter Taylor Rae and lap steel virtuoso Pattie Maxine will be sitting in this weekend.
“This is a good time to get together with other musicians.”
In 2010 the band played its first gig at Don Quixote’s, and now spends the majority of the time on the road. Last year the band — a blend of Allman Brothers-style rock, R&B and folk — played 80 shows across the nation.
“We are out on the road for as long as we physically can,” said Jamie, adding that the band traveled to Chicago, Kansas City and Salt Lake City, as well as the Northern California circuit. “We play where we can.”
The band has released two CDs entitled Coffis Brothers and the Mountain Men and Wrong Side of the Road, recorded at Gadgetbox Studios in Santa Cruz.
Earlier this year the group spent seven days in Barefoot Studios in Los Angeles with engineer and producer Andy Zenczak recording their third full-length album.
“We’re excited to release the album during the first part of the year,” Jamie said.
CDs and other band merchandise will be for sale both nights at Don Quixote’s.
Two performers will open on different nights during the upcoming shows.
Friday will be driven by Northern California-based Kingsborough, known for their heavy focus on raw-energy performances. On Saturday, singer, guitarist MCoy Tyler performs in styles ranging from power metal to bluegrass.
During both nights, another SLV grad, Nick Pavlina, who owns Humble Sea Brewery on the Westside of Santa Cruz, will be on-site pouring West Coast ales, barrel-aged Belgian beers and historical German lagers.
