Scotts Valley’s first Community Day is planned for Sept. 18. On that day, many local merchants have pledged a percentage of their sales to the Scotts Valley Educational Foundation to help pay for educational programs at the city’s public schools. Local residents, likewise, have volunteered to host yard sales and bake sales and set aside a percentage for the foundation.
A list of participating merchants and yard sales can be found at www.svef.net.
To support the effort, organizers have asked residents to visit Scotts Valley stores, restaurants and sales on Community Day. Red balloons will indicate participants.
Business people who wish to participate and residents who want to join in with a garage sale or bake sale can contact the Community Day chairwomen, Gina Johnson and Lori Gentile.
For information: Gina Johnson, gi**********@*******al.net or 334-1640; or Lori Gentile, lo********@***oo.com or 430-9680.
Word on the Street
The Press-Banner posed the following question to several people involved with Scotts Valley schools:
“Why are you looking forward to Community Day?”
“Community Day is an example of why I love Scotts Valley. Businesses and our citizens, parents or not, pull together to provide for our children during tough times. Our community truly is like a family — always there for one another when there is a need.”
Donna Lind, Scotts Valley City Council
“SVEF’S Community Day will be a day to celebrate and support our community and our schools. I think this is a great tradition in the making.”
Sue Roth, Scotts Valley School District board member
“Community Day is a great opportunity to raise money for our schools through local people and businesses in our community, and I hope we make a large profit. It’ll really be helpful to our school district!”
Blaire Ward, school board student member
“This is an opportunity to help meet the unprecedented financial needs that our schools face while we shop locally and celebrate our wonderful town.”
Denise Ahlstrom, Scotts Valley High School Parent Club president
“It is exciting to see that our whole community will be able to play a part in supporting our schools. Our kids are the future, and I am thankful to the businesses and volunteers who are making the effort to ensure we can provide the students of Scotts Valley the best possible start in life.”
John Abel, school board candidate
“The public school system is a community asset, and it will require the entire community to properly address the current financial crisis. Community Day is a wonderful opportunity to broaden awareness of the crisis and make more people part of the solution.”
Michael Shulman, school board president
