EDITOR,
Steve Schall’s letter (“Laird is part of the problem,” Press-Banner, July 17) is just another in a string of letters that continue to be misdirected.
While I understand this economic meltdown surely brings stress and demands explanation and solution, why are the targets of this frustration almost exclusively public employees?
While corporate CEOs mismanage their responsibilities and continue to be rewarded with bonuses equivalent to the budget of some small nations, I do not understand the constant attack on the public sector.
Letters such as Mr. Schall’s must warm the hearts of these outrageously compensated CEOs. I’ll bet every time one of these letters appears, CEOs across the land celebrate with the knowledge that somehow our collective attention has yet again been diverted from the real problem, their unregulated corporate compensation packages. We continue to be naive and blame one another, rather than demand corporate accountability.
I agree that these times call for all to sacrifice. However, before we start attacking our neighbors who happen to be public-sector employees and slicing public services, let’s demand that those at the very top of the economic food chain no longer receive so much while so many fellow citizens suffer in these hard times.
