The San Lorenzo Valley boys varsity swim teams took home a big win over both Soquel and St. Francis of Watsonville in three-way Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League competition on April 14.
The Cougars defeated Soquel 58-44 and St. Francis 69-46 to improve to 3-2 in the Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League this season.
SLV sophomore Devon Northcott won the 200 freestyle in 2 minutes, 1.63 seconds and the 500 meter free in 5:29.88. Teammate Nick Kirsten a senior, won the individual medley in 2:44.40, Curtis Garrett finished in second place in diving with a Central Coast Section qualifying score of 193.25, and won the 100 meter fly in 106.10. Senior, Tim Steinberg took first in the 100 meter backstroke finishing in 1:13.36. Elliot Ames (junior) won the 100 meter breast stroke for the Cougars in a time of 1:17.48.
The Cougar 400 meter relay team took first place in a time of 4:16.02. The relay team is made up of Northcott, Thomas Adams, Elijah Schoepp and Tim Steinberg.
Cougar girls
The girls also secured overall wins over Soquel and St. Francis led by powerful swimming from Savannah Prather, Shannon Bellardi, Maddie Pfister, Jillian Fulton and Sharina Billington.
The Cougars netted wins in the 200 meter free from Prather in 2:28.50, 50 meter free (Bellardi, 28.48), 100 meter butterfly (Fulton, 1:13.03), 100 meter free (Pfister, 1:03.45) and the 500 meter freestyle (Pfister, 6:55.91).
Marissa Patris won the 100 meter backstroke for the Cougars in 1:12.95, and Kate Fisher won the 100 meter breast stroke in 1:26.32.
The medley relay team of Billington, Fisher, Bellardi, and Fulton won in 2:15.47 and the 200 meter relay team of Pfister, Billington, Tess Kersten, and Bellardi took first in 1:58.65.
In addition, the 400 meter freestyle relay team of Pfister, Morgan Friend, Prather, and Fulton won in 4:34.68.
“It was a really neat meet for us,” coach Aaron Conger said. “It is fun to get two wins in one meet. It makes for a good day.”
Falcons fall to Aptos
In a 114-44 loss to Aptos High (6-0), Scotts Valley (3-2) got their only points on two wins from Aria Leonard, in the 100 free (57.58) and 100 breast stroke (1:15.50).
The Scotts Valley boys swim team (0-5), lost a tough matchup to Aptos losing 144-4. In their defense, Scotts Valley only has two swimmers on the team.
