In a game where mental mistakes can kill you, the San Lorenzo Valley dodged a bullet beating their young hosts Scotts Valley 3-1 on March 27. The Cougars pulled off the win despite 20 service errors.
SLV took the first game 25-23 after a comeback by the Falcons who were down 18-11 at one point. The lone Cougar senior Eric Lange served six aces on the night and led all the SLV servers dumping 16 points on the Falcons from the service line. Seven of those came in tandem in the first game.
“We’ve all moved back to our original positions and that really helped us get back into a rhythm,” Lange said. “Hopefully we can get over these stupid mistakes and play to our potential for the second half of the season.”
Lange has now been the lone senior on both the varsity boys basketball and volleyball teams.
“I don’t know that everybody saw eye to eye with the coaches in basketball,” Lange said. “Most of the seniors are doing baseball, track and other sports.”
Game two went to the Falcons who continued their charge from game one and after a see-saw battle pulled ahead to win 25-18.
SLV found its groove to put the Falcons away in the final two games 25-19, 25-19. Sophomore Derek Wolf led the charge with 29 kills on the night.
“Derek was everywhere tonight,” said Cougar Head Coach Chickory Roth. “He looked as comfortable as I have ever seen him.”
The Cougar outside hitter had almost as many kills from the back row as from the front as the SLV setter Adam Lopez set him up from behind the 10-foot line on numerous occasions.
SLV played Harbor High on March 29 after press time and will play at 6:30 p.m. April 10 at Soquel High.
The Falcons play undefeated Mount Madonna on March 29 after press time and will battle Pacific Collegiate School at home at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 10.
