The San Lorenzo Valley High girls golf team defeated Scotts Valley High in a windy Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League match this week 199 to 209.
San Lorenzo Valley senior MacKenzie Meadows was the match’s medalist, shooting a 44 on Tuesday, Sept. 29, on the par-32 Valley Gardens golf course, followed by Scotts Valley’s Monica Multer, who shot a 46.
The Cougars rounded out their scoring with Olivia Ambris (48), Jessica MacCallister (53) and Kat Gonzalez (54).
For Scotts Valley, Natalie Ifland (50), Lexi Mexicano (55) and Heidi Ridel (58) completed the team.
The Cougars, led by three seniors, improved to 3-4 in the SCCAL, and the young Scotts Valley team fell to 2-5.
Midway through the season, both the SLV and Scotts Valley teams are in the middle of the pack in the SCCAL, but the players have fun and improve each week, according to their coaches.
Meadows is the solid No. 1 for the Cougars, coach Shane Sutcliffe said.
“On any given day, she can hit the ball with anybody and as far as anybody,” he said.
Ambris is the team’s No. 2 player, and both will likely get a shot to play in the Central Coast Section tournament at the end of the season, Sutcliffe said.
In Scotts Valley, a number of girls battled the flu in the first half of the season, coach Rick Hager said. Hager has juggled lineups based on which players are healthy on any given day.
“All my girls are super-nice kids, fun to be around, and they listen well,” the ninth-year coach said.
Sophomores Ifland, Multer and Regina Zwang are the Falcons’ top players, and the rest of the eight-girl team is steadily improving, Hager said.
“We have a real good, young team,” he said.
Ifland, who golfed in the CCS tournament as a freshman last season, will likely represent the Falcons again.
