Weeks of preparations paid small dividends as the San Lorenzo Valley High School fell 39-0 to defending Central Coast Section Division IV champion Sacred Heart Prep.
The Gators kept the Cougar offense off the field for most of the game while scoring on their first four possessions.
Sacred Heart, who beat Carmel High in last years Division IV championship game, showcased their young talent by scoring five first half touchdowns. The final dagger came when Gator running back Tyler McCool jaunted 80 yards for the touchdown with 30 seconds left in the first half. McCool finished the game with 149 yards on eight carries and two touchdowns, to lead the Sacred Heart offense.
“We have had practices where we have played harder,” SLV Defensive Coach Dave Poetzinger said. “Our guys just didn’t look ready.”
Gators quarterback Jack Larson completed 6 of 13 passes for 95 yards and a pair of touchdowns in his first start as a senior.
SLV was held to 150 total yards as Sacred Heart put up 362. Cougar quarterback Tyler Gilbert completed 8-19 passes to eight different receivers for 46 yards and one interception.
“They were far more prepared and already in synch,” Head Coach Doug Morris said. “It really opened our eyes, that’s why we play games like this.”
Jonny Cooper carried 13 times for 61 yards and Robbie Biagiotti took six carries 28 yards for the Cougars.
SLV will host Piedmont High at home on Saturday, Sept. 10 at 2 p.m. at SLV High.
