The San Lorenzo Valley varsity boys basketball team bowed out in the first round of the Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League tournament with a 68-49 loss to St. Francis High in Watsonville on Tuesday, Feb. 12.
The Cougars were led by Billy Mullins, who scored 15 points in the loss.
The Cougars will now wait to see if they qualify for the Central Coast Section tournament, which begins play Feb. 19. Seeding will be determined this weekend.
The Cougars finished the season 9-16 overall and 4-8 in league after losing five of their last six games in the regular season and playoffs.
Scotts Valley girls on track for playoffs
The Scotts Valley High varsity girls basketball team played Santa Cruz High School in the first round of the Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League playoffs after press time Wednesday, Feb. 13.
The team entered the postseason tournament with a 19-9 record, including 9-3 in SCCAL. That mark was good enough for second in league behind Santa Cruz (12-0) and qualified the Falcons for the Central Coast Section tournament.
They will find out their seed for the tournament Sunday, Feb. 17, though it’s likely the Falcons will host a first-round game Tuesday, Feb. 19.
Scotts Valley has been led by the high-scoring duo of Nadene Hart and Angela Silver. Hart has averaged 16.3 points per contest and Silver 15.8.
Freshman point guard Nikiya Bechtel has averaged eight points per contest.
 
SLV girls, SV boys struggle
Both the San Lorenzo Valley high girls and Scotts Valley High boys varsity teams struggled in league this season.
The SLV girls finished the season 0-12 in the Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League and 0-21 overall.
The young Scotts Valley boys also struggled, capping the season with a 0-12 record in league, 0-22 overall. The team had one senior, Ari Wargon and a host of sophomores.
